As of now it does not look good for maintaining Wisconsin's State Adoption Records Search Program. I am forwarding this update to the adoptlaw list with a request that anyone with Wisconsin connections please contact our governor to express your displeasure at the privatization of the search program. His address is:
Governor Scott McCallum
(ATTN: Lisa Hart)
State Capitol
Madison, WI

(608-266-1212)Another aspect of the problem is that we have, in Wisconsin, a model program for the country, even though it is far from perfect, and even though we all know that a far better option would be to do what other states have done and give adoptees access to their records. The ARSP is a program that many of those on this list have fought to obtain, retain, and fix over the last 20 years. It looks very much like, unless we pull off a major coup, we will loose it. Unfortunately, the way in which the private agencies will operate it is a great huge unknown at this point. Perhaps all things must end, just as Adoption Information and Direction, the organization that arose from the efforts of several of us, came to the end of its time a few years ago. If this happens to the search program, we have at the very least helped many Wisconsin triad members obtain what should have been their legal birthright all along. But it's NOT time to give up yet!
