As many of you know, NH's open records bill - HB 499 - will have its hearing before the Child & Family Law Committee on Wednesday, February 14, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. We have learend that a group will be there to lobby relative to the purported confidentiality promised to birth mothers and the irrational fear of increased abortions due to open records.
NH OARC needs your help. It is time to flood the Child & Family Law Committee members with mail in support of HB 449. If you are a birthmother, please write to the committee members below and tell them that you were not promised confidentiality, but rather that it was imposed on you. Be sure to add (if this is indeed the case) that you did not confidentiality at the time of surrender, nor do you want it now. If you have any facts that will refute the argument that open records will mean an increase rate of abortions and decrease in adoptions please respond to that issue.
You can view HB 449 by going to the Webster website:
http://www.gencourt.state.nh.us/ie/;
Then click on the 'House Bill Intro. List';
Scroll down till you see LSR 818.{about 3/4 down the page}; then click on 'bill text'.When you post to the committee members, please, please make sure that you do not make your post about search and reunion. Search and reunion is a sure fire way to kill HB 499!! The NH legislators are inundated with proposed legislation relating to privacy issues. If they think that this is about privacy for even a second HB 499 will die!!
