Indiana has had an adoption registry since 1984. Any adoptee over the age of 21, a birth parent whose child is over the age of 21, or an adoptive parent whose child is under the age of 21 may file with the registry. To obtain state registry papers, call Mary Hinds at the Indiana State Department of Health at 317-233-7253. If there is a registry match, Mary will send paperwork to complete the reunion. If there is not a match, Mary will send non-identifying information. Once the non-identifying information has been sent, one may file a petition with the court to appoint a confidential intermediary to open the adoption records for a search. Mary Hinds will recommend a confidential intermediary for this court procedure. The court appointed confidential intermediary program began in 1993.

Too register, one needs to call 317-233-7253 (Indiana State Department of Health Adoption Registry phone number). I have completed 173 searches in 11 years. Eighty-three percent of the searches resulted in a reunion. The other 17% did not want a reunion.

If you would like more information, it would be best to contact Lori Baxter. Thank you.
