I have been working hard and I know some of you have been too in order to stop the baby dump bill HB 632 from passing in committee. However, it did just that yesterday. HB 632 has passed the House Human Services committee with a vote of 8-0. This bill is still in front of the Senate Judiciary committee and I have it on good authority that they are very leary of passing this bill into law. PLEASE take the time to call your local Senator AND call the list of Senate committee members listed below. They will vote soon so please don't send letters. A call is the way to get their attention now and won't take too much of your time.
Call and ask to speak to the senator's aide and tell him/her that you are calling in regards to bill HB 632, the baby abandonment bill, and that you request that the senator in question vote NO on this bill. Give your reasons. Tell them how these bills leave these young birth mothers with no support/help, how we as tax payers will bear the brunt of any and all costs that must be assumed for these children, that all people have a right to know their personal family history and their medical history, how other states have these laws and that the statistics prove that they do NOT work (TX has only had 2 babies abandoned under the safe haven law but still had something like 14 other babies abandoned illegally!), and anything further you feel they must know about this legislation.
Please.....don't let this happen in our state. Take the few minutes out of your day to make the call to stop this in its tracks. Also, talk to your friends, family and neighbors, educate them and ask them to make the call also.
I just discovered today, thanks to a letter from a Senator, that they hid the baby dump bill and rushed it through the Senate at the last minute with no one the wiser. We had a Senator who told us the bill would sit until next term and he would let us know before it came up for vote then. I must assume that he either changed his mind about talking with us, or they put it out there so quickly he didn't have the chance to talk with us. The bill was voted in with NO opposition in the Senate. So, IL was the next domino to fall in the chain of baby dump states. Sorry guys...but I think we lost this one before we ever started.
