Mickey Sharon Walker started the Plaque of Love crusade in November 1999 to honor and remember triad members who died because of lack of medical history. She suggested that those wishing to join her in this memorial effort wear a green ribbon because she felt we needed something visible and tangible to remind us of our goals"

* to show support for opening adoption records,
* to support those who are searching

As word of the request spread via Internet, Ann Wilmer, an adult adoptee, suggested that the triad community extend the wearing of ribbons beyond the first business day of the new year. Before the month was out many had pledged to join her in a national campaign by wearing green ribbons until all states open adoption records.

All triad members do not agree on every aspect of how to bring about adoption reform but the overwhelming majority of us support the position that adoption records, including court records and original birth certificates should be opened to adoptees. Adoptees are the only class of Americans who are not permitted

* to obtain their original, unaltered birth certificates.
* to see court records of actions to which they were party, albeit as minors.
* to have full disclosure of actions taken by a legal guardian or guardian ad lit em on their behalf once they have reached the legal status of adulthood.

Wearing a green ribbon on your lapel expresses sympathy and solidarity with adoptees in their quest for full suffrage in their respective states.
