My name is Shannon Johnson. I am a married, stay at home mother of two, that very recently became interested in the Adoption Reform movement. I was a foster child until I was nearly 5, and then was adopted into a loving family, but always wanted to know what had happened to my first family, so when I turned 19, I began to search. I found my birth mother, and had a relationship with her for a few years, but, because of old wounds, we had a falling out, and were unable to stay close.

One day, about a year ago, just a few months after I got my computer, I typed in the word 'adoption', and was surprised to see all that came up, on the screen and within. As I began to read from sites like 'GREEN RIBBON' and 'BASTARD NATION' and 'ABORN' and 'ADOPTESE' and CALIFORNIA OPEN 2000, something within awakened, and I knew that I wanted to get involved. So I joined as many groups as I could, and began to talk to as many people as I could, and read as many books as I could, so that I could start to learn. I realized that even though my reunion experience had not been a 'great' one, open records isn't about reunions...it's about rights!

As Coordinator to the state of California, I feel like a turtle in the slow lane. I'm not really sure what I'm doing, but I'm slowly learning, with Ann's guidance. I sure would appreciate any advice any of you might have for me.
