All About Helms...
More Helms!

Here's the newer stuff. I think it looks much better than the older ones! Hopefully you agree! I'll be continually updating as I make new ones.

This is one of the newer helms. I've started using leftover pattern welded/damascus steel from my knife projects, as accent pieces on my armours. This one has a 300 layer nasal piece and a 7 layer center ridge piece. The helm is mild steel with 1050 high carbon for the slats. The trim was etched and chiseled with period designs. I really like the way this one came out and will definitely be doing many more ridge helms with damascus accents.

Here's the most recent spangenhelm. This one is 14 ga mild steel on the panels, 16 ga everywhere else. The slats are re-enforced with a 14 ga strip overlay. I used decorative rivet patterns just for kicks and etched dragons into nickle silver lining the front cheek edges. The brows are also nickel silver. I tried to "blend" the barwork into the design by matching the contour of the bottom of the nasal. The barwork has 7/8" spaces for optimal vision.
Here's a helm I just finished up for Sir Gowin of Eddington, Baron of Stargate (Houston, TX). It's 13 ga type 316 Stainless with brass extras. He wanted a crusader style, but with a round top. I modeled the basic structure mostly after some sugarloaf designs. The brass decorations came from several illuminations of crusaders in great helms (most likely pembridge style).

This is Robert de Corruthers' helm. Is was based off a helm that looked to be and early barbute style. There were differing decriptions of the helm depending which source you look at. Anyways, this one uses all type 316 stainless, with lots of brass extras. There was etching along the browline band, but it didn't turn out very deep. This pic is missing the final support band behind the center of the nasal..hence the missing rivet pairs.

This is a solid 14 ga helm. Even the banding is made from 14 ga mild steel. It is rivet construction with welding on the inside in strategic areas for additional strength. The brass is hammer finished along the eye borders. I made this one closed face because I think it looks better than a bunch of bars. The nasal comes all the way down to the upper lip and has a 1/2" space below it. This makes for good breathability. I also like the "truss head"...or flattened...rivets. They look nicer and are more sword friendly.
