Letter of the Week

I was deeply concerned to learn that a bullfight was scheduled for the 22nd and 23th February in Guatemala City.

May I draw your attention to the fact that bullfights are horrific shows in which bulls and horses are tortured only for the entertainment of people. Whereas they are still persisting in some countries in the name of "tradition", they are forbidden everywhere else where the "tradition" cannot be put forward (as it is the case in France where only certain towns are allowed to organise bullfights) since they are now considered as a cruel and inhuman "spectacle". "Tradition" is the only motive that prevents bullfights from disappearing. How then a country like Guatemala can allow for its first time in history a bullfight?

By attending these shows, people are taught that it is normal - and even entertaining- to hurt and disrespect animals. They learn that it is possible to be delighted from the suffering of living beings. All the violence involved in a bullfight teaches also violence between human beings. People who cannot respect animal have generally no respect for human beings neither. Allowing in your country such a barbaric show is the equivalent to open a door for a violent society.

I believe that the wise and advised Guatemalan authorities will understand this appeal and therefore forbid this spectacle, following the example of Moscow and Cuba.

Sincerely,
