Background: On October 6th Nova Scotia held its first
open farm days to promote awareness of agriculture in the
province. However, no large scale chicken farms were open
to the public. The letter is a request to the government
ministry that organized the open farms day asking that
in the future chicken terrorizing facilities be included
Dear Ernest Fage, Nova Scotia Minister of Agriculture:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank your department for
organizing the recent Open Farm Day. Along with my wife and three children
I visited several farms in the Wolfville area. We truly were "excited by
this new event" and hope that it is the start of a successful educational
and marketing tool for Nova Scotian farms.
In our modern age, with the urbanization of life, few children have any
real knowledge about how the food they eat is produced. Consequently,
I hope that the program expands in coming years to include a wider variety
of products and food items. My four year boy sorely wanted to visit a
chicken "ranch" but unfortunately there did not seem to be any on the list
of open farms. Because of eagle watching I happen to know that the
Wolfville area has many farms where chickens are raised in large
quantities. Please encourage such farms to open their doors for next year's
Open Farm Day so that the goals of education and awareness are fully met.
Without a greater understanding and knowledge of farm practices the majority
of Nova Scotians cannot begin to value and appreciate the role that agriculture
plays in our lives. Thank you.
