In response to your latest "What's Hot, What's Not"
column, I agree that the meat industry is not hot. It
has not been hot for a long time, but only recently
has it been gaining media attention. Meat is though,
not hot. How can it be-- backed by the horrendous meat
indsutry which daily destroys our environment, our
health and causes millions of animals to suffer
through a cruel, demeaning life and a scary, painful
death?
About 19 000 people turn to vegetarianism every day.
This is not a petty number. These people take what
everyone already knows and put it into action, rather
than simply pointing at it and saying it's wrong.
There is NO POINT in saying something is wrong and
then not doing anything about it. Becoming vegetarian
is unbelievably simple, truly healthgiving and a huge
step towards preserving our environment and combatting
world hunger, not to mention saving the lives of about
82 animals per year.
The meat industry cannot be cruel without the meat
and the consumers that create the demand. The only
real reason left that people eat meat is because they
enjoy the taste. But when this seamingly small action
(repeated several times a day, throughout a lifetime)
causes so much strife, listening to your tastebuds
seems like an awfully selfish thing to do. I encourage
you to try vegetarianism, and talk to someone who
knows how to cook well. You won't be sorry you tried
and you can feel that your actions will match what you
feel in your heart.
