Another site devoted to advanced pagemaking subjects.
Website Accessibility
I am fixing to embark on a new journey in website design. I am going to try to make my website accessible to
people with disabilities of various sorts that would keep them from viewing my information. I already knew about the need
to account for browser differences. So I am including some links to sites I will use to read up on this subject. We all
as webdesigners need to be aware of this aspect of designing.
Check outAnyBrowser.com for browser compatibility issues. According to my account at Sitemeter,
36% of my website users are Netscape drivers. So I downloaded a Netscape browser and viewed my pages to see how they saw them and
I was appalled. Not at all what I wanted.
It didn't take long for me to redesign and bring the site back inline with my idea. I'm just thankful I haven't alienated
over a third of my audience.
Web Accessibility Initiative is the document we will measure our accessibility by. Reading and referring to this document will
keep us all aware of the plight of the disabled on the web.
Bobby an accessibility validator. They offer a seal of approval upon finding your site valid. I'm not ready yet, but I will be.
Linkscan will help you find broken links on your site. You might be thinking you don't need this now but as your site grows it becomes
a big job hitting all the links everyday to make sure they are running.
W3C Validator Service is a big help making sure your code is right. If your code isn't right it will glitch "Page Reader" software
causing your page to be overlooked by the blind.
These links are just the beginning. I will be posting more on this subject as I study the issues. If in the meantime you have any questions regarding people with disabilities
